Q&A With Dr. Subodh Kulkarni, CyberOptics CEO

Subodh Kulkarni CyberOptics CEO

Q. How significant is the 3D sensor supply relationship you entered into with KLA-Tencor?
A. This is a strategically significant relationship. We entered into a mutually exclusive agreement to supply 3D sensor subsystems for KLA-Tencor BEOL package inspection systems. The agreement leverages CyberOptics’ extensive R&D efforts into 3D sensing with KLA-Tencor’s industry leading systems design, applications expertise and customer service.

Q. Is this supply agreement for the breakthrough 3D Multi-Reflection Suppression (MRS) sensor?
A. Yes, it is. It validates the merits of the MRS technology since the KLA-Tencor team stringently tested our sensor technology among several potential technologies before choosing it. Since they are inspecting the most advanced semiconductor packages that go into the latest tablets and smartphones it’s critical they choose the very best technology to meet their specific requirements. We are very pleased to have been selected. This partnership allows KLA-Tencor to supply more compelling system solutions to their customers, while improving their time to market.

Q. Does this extend your sensor market penetration into Semiconductor?A.This extends our presence into the back-end semiconductor markets where KLA-Tencor is the dominant market share leader in back-end inspection.
We are the global market leader in wireless measurement devices in the semiconductor market today. Our sensors are being used in the front-end of the FABs for leveling, gapping, vibration, teaching and airborne particle measurement to increase yields and productivity. With this agreement, we are now participating in the back-end of the semiconductor FAB with our 3D MRS sensors for KLA-Tencor’s BEOL package inspection systems.

Q. What are the benefits to the FABs?
A. They can be confident they are using a combination of the best-in-class technology to improve yields and productivity – ultimately to favorably impact their bottom line.
