The market wants fast and highly accurate 3D AOI, says CyberOptics at

Q:  There was really a lot of hype with 3D, but the optical inspection market has now come to a point, and certainly CyberOptics has come to a point of really driving it forward. Who is using 3D?

A:  Many customers, but I would say the biggest drivers of 3D automated optical inspection are the latest smartphones and tablets – the big names obviously. If you look at the boards they have designed in the latest products launched they do need the third dimension. We are talking about co-planarity and lifted leads so finally these defects have really become important. I would say, auto would be the next segment. Auto clearly has some boards where the heights are beginning to show up as defects now. If you look at the latest LED kind of boards that Audi and BMW are using those things are becoming important. So you’re right, a few years ago, 3D measurement was still on the hype side, but clearly now, the customers need the 3rd dimension to determine if it’s a pass or fail and that’s naturally why the demand is rising so quickly. As a practical point, the price point of 3D AOI systems were quite high at well over $200,000 euros, which was prohibitive for many manufacturers to absorb in their budget, but prices have come down which naturally has spurred the demand. So the combination of slightly lower prices, combined with the customers’ advanced boards are contributing to the growth. The market is globally ~$80-$100M, growing at ~40% CAGR. It is finally taking off.
